Day 4 - Tired ZZZ!
Nyhavn canal
Today I was tired!! So I decided it was a day to do only a couple of things and then write this blog! So I went to the famous canal and took the obligatory pictures and once I found that the nearby art gallery was closed, I instead decided to head over to Christianhavn to explore that island and take better pictures of Our Savior's Church. On the way I found a famous ice cream shop called Kastbergs which sells Licorice ice cream!
Delicious!
The Church of Our Saviour had the option to go up the spiral tower but 1. I am scared of heights and 2. the next tour was in 40 minutes and I didn't want to wait. Inside the Church was gorgeous!
The photo doesn't show that the spiral is a staircase!
How amazing is this! I would be totally distracted every week by this in front of me!
This must be loud!
I decided I didn't want to do Tivoli. I am not a fan of fun fairs anyway and it seemed similar to the Vienna fairground (minus the ferris wheel) so wasn't too bothered about missing it. I hope to do one one evening meal tonight at a local place called Puls and then I fly tomorrow.
So what are my take aways? The Visit Copenhagen card was a must! I could travel allover the palace with the card and saved loads of money. There were loads of museum, palaces, art galleries and boat trips that would have cost at least £20 each time so £110 for 5 days was worth it!
Public transport in the city puts the UK to shame! People don't rush or push on to the train because 1. there will be another one in 10/20 minutes (even on Sunday it was 30 minutes between trains for Roskilde which is nothing!). The trains also wait until everyone is on, so if a family are struggling with a pushchair on a busy carriage the guard will help them move to another carriage even if this means they leave late. Also Double decker trains to the suburbs! On Monday when none of the trains were running to my area - they had staff posted everywhere to redirect us to the Metro and buses to our destination. It was great.
I didn't end up trying 'Danish' food because I am allergic to Shellfish but like I said, enjoyed Danish twists on familiar items which is I guess what happens everywhere. it was delicious. I liked the microbreweries I tried but the one in the Meat Packing district made me realise I was not cool enough to go there at peak time! It really was warehouses and run down areas, probably fine when everything is open and busy with hipsters but I looked like a tourist as it was raining and I had my head scarf on! Still would be cool to go with someone and not far from the Metro entrance of the Central station so felt safe if you didn't go the wrong way like I did!
I would have appreciate some more walking maps or signs around the centre as I had to use my data allowance to navigate on the first day and then screenshot maps when I had access to wifi but I think that is because I was trying to do too much and not wandering as other seemed to be doing. You would have found things eventually I suppose - I am just not like that!
I took £300 with me and this seems to have covered all my meals and 'sundries'. I was limited for gifts as I have cabin bag (easyjet allowance is 45 x 36 x 20 cm) and I could not find a post office anywhere (I had to use a Souvenir shop for postcards and stamps or I would have struggled!) so this helped but I there were options to eat cheaper (I would have a large breakfast at a cafe and then an evening meal) so it could go further if you were happy with the Convenience store food (nice, fresh made sandwiches so not like once in the UK!)
I also wanted to say how great the staff at CABINN Metro where in supporting me as I had to swap rooms as I had had to book two extra nights after my flights got changed. It was very seamless and the quality of the room was still good - it was just smaller (the wifi was a little shakier in the 'cheaper' room). I was also impressed that they are hosting Ukrainian refugees and had lots of signs and instructions in Ukrainian.
All in all Copenhagen has absolutely masses to do and see and I would recommend to anyone.
